Safer Online Shopping with Masterpass

I must admit that even though I spend half my life online, I still have a little shudder and hesitation entering my credit card details when buying stuff online.

MasterPass-LogoThis week I signed up for a new service called MasterPass which allows you to purchase online without actually entering your credit or debit card details. This is going to be the way of the future because more and more of us are going to be doing our grocery orders, paying for services and even doing our Christmas shopping online.

I thought I would take this opportunity to beat the rush and grab a stack of Christmas presents from online retailer Booktopia and at the same time test drive  MasterPass.

Setup:

The first step was to set up my bank digital wallet and even though I don’t bank with them, I did it simply and quickly through NAB. The process was easy:

  1. Enter your details and choose a password
  2. Pick a security question for recovering your account if necessary
  3. Add your credit card and shipping details

That’s it!

Now I can use my email address and password wherever MasterPass is accepted, so I don’t have to save personal details on file with multiple retailers all over the internet, and don’t have to keep entering them. You can check out some of the big names already accepting MasterPass here.

Using Masterpass

I filled the shopping cart full of Christmas presents for the kids and a few nieces and nephews … Novels, DVDs, colouring books and a full set of the Narnia series. I even snuck in a Blu-ray for myself and I headed to the checkout. Instead of entering my credit card details I simply chose MasterPass, entered my password and that was it.

Just like a normal checkout but without having to reach for my card and enter the details again online, MasterPass securely accessed my details.

Two days later my express post parcel arrived with half of my Christmas shopping done! You’ve gotta love that online shopping and without the crowds and now without the risk of a dodgy site having my credit card details … Everyone’s a winner!

The Verdict

This was just so much easier than using the usual form filling process and entering my card details that I will definitely look for online shops that accept MasterPass from now on. I feel secure because it’s in conjunction with my normal bank and I know that MasterPass purchases are guaranteed in the same way as my credit card.

You can sign up for MasterPass through many of the big banks or check out more here.
