There has been a lot of talk about kinetic sand and how awesome it is. I have heard around the traps that there was a version you could make at home.
I thought over the school holidays we would take up the challenge and make ourselves some Moonsand as they call it.
Recipe and Ingredients:
5 Cups of extra fine play sand (you can buy at Bunnings)
2 1/2 Cups of Cornstarch / Cornflour
1 Cup of Water
Food Colouring
Place all of the ingredients into a clean bucket / bowl and mix together. Add desired food coloring to the water and gradually add water until you have the desired consistency. Mix well. Cover and store in an airtight container.
Some things you will want to know. The kids loved it and it was very fun. Unlike kinetic sand which you purchase from the shop this is still a little messy so would recommend you play with it outside. The stand sticks together and is a strange mix of playdough and wet sand however it does dry out and become more like sand.
You need to store it in an airtight container and each time you get it out add a little bit of water to give it some moisture and help it stick together.
I would say that it is definitely not as good as “the real thing” however the kids enjoyed the process of making it, the ingredients were all very affordable and it kept them entertained for ages.
