With the MASSIVE increase over the past few years in electricty costs and it is only projected to get worse with time I don’t know about you but any advice I can get to save money I welcome with open arms.
The good news for anyone living in the Melbourne Metro Area is there is an awesome service being offered by AGL to come and do a Home Energy Check Up to show you lots of different ways you can save money on your electricity costs.
AGL’s Home Energy Check Up is a one-on-one, personalised assessment of the energy efficiency of your home, from a trained AGL Smarter Living assessor. After you assessment they provide you with a personalised report outlining any practical solutions that could help you reduce your energy consumption, save money and increase the comfort and value of your home.
One of my good friends Vickie who lives in Melbourne put her hand up to road test an AGL Home Energy Check Up and she shares her experience and findings below ….
“Both my kids have done energy audits of the house through school projects in the past and I thought we were doing ok!
We are all vigilant with turning off lights, having short showers, keeping the heating down, and only on 38+ days turning on the air-conditioner. But wow – there are so many more things we can do!
I loved that the audit gave us simple, cheap and easy things that we can do ourselves and implement straight away as well as ideas for longer term that will require employing tradesmen and a bigger investment. We have already replaced our halogen light globes with LEDs!
In some ways the audit felt like a report on cleanliness as Chris ran a white glove over some areas! He didn’t really, but one of the best tips he had was to look for areas of grime build-up and spiderwebs to identify drafts.
For us the drafts were coming through doors – solved simply by putting ecoseals around the doors; windows – so using silicon around window frames and filling up vents; having a chimney flue seal and sealing up exhaust fans. Next year we aim to get a better pool cover.
I also learnt about valve cosies – who even knew you could put a cosie on your hot water system to save money!
For bigger investments we like the idea of having a pelmet over the window on the south side; and improving the weight of the curtains; adding some additional wall insulation and window film to act as double-glazing.
So we have learned a lot – the most important being that you can always do more to save money and protect the environment. Chris was informative without being judgmental; inquisitive without being intrusive; so it was a pleasure to have him work with us on some ideas” – Vickie Burkinshaw Melbourne Mum of Two
