Following on from last week’s post on popular boys’ party themes, following are our most popular girls’ party themes.
Pool/beach party
Not as self conscious about getting into a pair of swimmers as their mums, these water babies love to splash around playing marco polo. Assuming you have a pool – just add beach chairs, towels and umbrellas, and adapt land based games to water, e.g. hot potato with an inflatable ball, corners, duck duck goose, what’s the time mr wolf, traffic lights, etc.
Disco
You make me feel like dancing…. They may not know that one but I’m forever updating the ipods with latest pop songs for 8-9yo girls. This theme is great for boys too – just adapt to rock star. Try to have a late afternoon or early evening party if you can or black out your garage cause you can’t have a disco party without a mirror ball, disco lights and glow products! Games are easy with lots of musical ones like pass the parcel, musical chairs, musical statues, dance competitions, etc.
Fairy
I thought I would never get to have a fairy party for my daughter who refused to wear a dress until she was 4. However, Tinkerbell was a bit hit last year, especially the doll in the cake. This one is fun to decorate as you can create a fairy garden inside a gazebo if you have one and have the whole party in there, or on your deck or in your house. Just add flowers, plants, vines, rocks, pebbles, statues, fairy bread and a sprinkle of pixie dust!
Princess
Thanks to Disney this is a hugely popular theme and again if you have a gazebo at home or deck, convert it to castle with backdrops, cardboard cutouts, e.g. turrets, princesses, knights, dragons, etc. If you have boys make it princesses and knights and the games generic. We split the kids into groups and whilst the girls go looking for Cinderella’s lost slipper the boys play musical statues with their swords and when it comes to craft time the girls decorated tiaras whilst the boys decorate shields. High teas are great for this theme with mini sandwiches, chocolate brownies, cupcakes, muffins, etc.
Dora
This spanish adventurer and her cousin diego are more famous than Christopher Columbus, and continue to be one of our most requested themes. Aimed at younger kids we tend to stick to a shorter party and activities like reading time (dora adventure), bubble wands, simple scavenger hunt, musical flowers, etc. Decorate like a festival with lots of colour and bunting and if you are game experiment with some spanish food for the kids.
I have to give a special mention to tea parties which are hugely popular and would take a whole page to write about, as well as mini mouse who seems to making a big comeback this year. As far as fad themes go, Hannah Montana out performed them all up until last year and Monster High was also a special request.
