Just last week we were over at my parents’ house for the weekend. My parents live on a largish property. My dad has this thing about mowing the lawn with his push mower as a way of making sure he stays active. For some reason on this particular Sunday afternoon he was keen to mow the lawn but was in a hurry and decided to use his ride-on mower. My mother loves to relive the past so she told Dad to get the trailer for the mower out of the shed for the girls to have a ride in it.
That trailer must have been locked up in that shed for at least 15-20 years, but Dad did what he was told like a good husband does 😉 (he has learnt after 40 years to not argue with the mother haha).
I have to say seeing my 2 eldest daughters riding in the trailer behind grandpa mowing the lawn made my heart sing. That was me in that very same trailer 25 years ago and now it is them. There is something special and magical about seeing your kids experiencing some of the same childhood memories as you.
The good old slip’n’slide is another favourite of mine from my childhood. I have to admit hubby and I still get in and amongst it at times and it is so much fun seeing the girls have a great time in the backyard!
Another classic childhood moment was playing cricket with the wheelie bin as stumps haha. Recently we were given a wheelie bin stumps sticker and the girls have been keen to play some front yard cricket, which has made Mr school dad very happy!!
There are also a few famous food brands that come to mind when I think of my childhood and one of the most memorable is Weet-Bix. Does anybody else remember playing the “Weet-Bix” challenge where you have to race another person to see who could eat an entire dry Weet-Bix first? Haha. We played that game so many times. It sounds easy, but seriously you should try it lol it’s not as easy as you think 🙂
There was also the Weet-Bix breakfast challenge my brother and his friends would take, which was to see who could eat the most Weet-Bix for breakfast haha. From memory, I recall someone managing to eat 16 Weet-Bix for breakfast one morning. My middle daughter loves her Weet-Bix, and it gives me a little smile and reminds me of my childhood when I see her eating them! For me Weet-Bix brings back one of those quintessential childhood memories. These memories make me smile and I love that they were such simple fun!! I say bring back the simple fun!
