At this time of year, the kids often come home from School with dry and cracked lips. Worse still, they are often red and sore from them licking them all day….
Here are 5 ways to combat this this Winter:
- Drink Plenty of Water
When your body is dehydrated, often it shows first in your lips! It is easy not to drink enough water when the weather is cold – but having 6-8 glasses of water per day is ideal. - Avoid Licking Your Lips
Easier said than done, I know, but licking your lips may bring temporary relief, but when the saliva on your lips evaporates it can dry them out further..delaying the healing process. - Apply Soothing Ointment or Lip Balm
Look for a lip balm that contains natural moisturisers like beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, almond oil, aloe vera – and not much else. Don’t choose a lip balm with an long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce as these often provide temporary relief but dry your lips out more. Whatever type you choose, apply it often and put it on before lipstick or lip gloss so it protects your lips. - Apply Oil
For an intense moisturing lip treatment, rub a little oil on your lips. It will sooth and moisturise your lips while protecting them against further damage. Some oil examples are: almond, coconut, olive and jojoba. Honey is also a great natural moisturiser that has healing and antibacterial properties. - Breath
Try breathing through your nose as much as possible! Having air constantly pass over your lips serves to dry them out. Also, using a humidifier when indoors will help moisten the air and keep your lips moisturised.
