Over the weekend I was lucky enough to get along to a preview screening of the latest Dreamworks Trolls movie. To be completely honest with you I was more than a little excited to see this as I collected Trolls as a little girl and loved them so very much.
My eldest daughter had a dance recital practice so couldn’t come along with us so I thought I would make a play date out of it and let my 6 year old daughter bring 2 friends with us to see it to let y’all know what they thought.
When the first preview came out many months ago I remember thinking that it looked like it would be a great kid’s movie and it did not disappoint.
The movie is a smart, funny and irreverent comedy about the search for happiness, and just how far some will go to get it. The film transports audiences to a colorful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, who have a constant dance in their step and a song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomachs.
After the Bergen invade Troll Village, Poppy (Kendrick), the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly-cautious curmudgeonly Branch (Timberlake) set off on a journey to rescue her friends. Together, this mismatched duo embarks on a rescue mission full of adventure and mishaps – trying to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done.
So what do you need to know about this movie?
This movie was very entertaining and engaging for all 3 of the children I took along to see it plus me as the grown up. I didn’t find myself wishing it was over already lol. In their words they LOVED IT and pretty much just wanted to go see it again.
I believe this movie would be easy enough to follow along for children from around the age of 3. Visually it was quite amazing and the singing and dancing creates some great space between the dialogue.
There is a bit of singing in the movie which is actually quite awesome as it is a mix of five original songs by Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande, Anna Kendrick and Gwen Stefani plus they have added in quite a few classic hits from the 60s through to the 80s which most parents will recognise. I found myself singing along a few times lol.
The only thing I would flag is that the premise of the movie centers around the Bergens essentially eating the Trolls as a way that they experience happiness. The way that this plays out in the movie isn’t particularly scary however there is a chance that if your child is sensitive to monster type looking creatures and being eaten that they may find this idea a little scary. There were a few times it showed a Troll being eaten by a Bergen however one of those times was a old memory and the other time was not what it appeared to be.
