The Easiest Way to Teach Your Kids to Tie Shoe Laces

My son is six years old, and I have to be honest: I’ve never even attempted to teach him to tie shoe laces. It’s probably a bad case of middle child syndrome, but honestly, with all the great Velcro shoes on the market, I just haven’t been bothered.

But that all needs to change this year because he’s about to start playing rugby, and Velcro shoes just aren’t done in rugby, apparently. (Boooooo!) He needs to know how to tie shoe laces – stat!

My six-year-old is about to get schooled by a clever and super cute five-year-old named Colton. Colton’s mum Ashley Lillard shared a video on the Love What Matters Facebook page recently, showing Colton sharing his ingeniously simple shoe tying method that will change the way kids everywhere tie shoe laces.

Runners’ lace tying trick

As a runner, I’ve always known those second lace holes at the opening of the shoe were great for making your shoes tighter so your feet don’t slide around and make you lose your toenails, but Colton shows us there is a second, much more sneaky, use for those holes.

Take it away, Colton

It’s a super simple process that your child can have over and done in less than a minute with a little bit of practice. And not one for hogging the credit, Colton shares at the end of the video that he learned this super cool trick from his friend, River.

Thanks River, and thanks Colton. Teaching my son to tie shoe laces is going to be so much easier now!

Check out the video below and see what you think. Too easy or what?

Reckon Colton/River’s excellent tip to teach kids how to tie shoe laces will help your child learn? Would you swap to tying your laces like this yourself?
