Thanks to School Mum, I was lucky enough to get to see the Lego Batman Movie, along with Mr 12, Mr 8.5 and Miss 7, this past weekend.
We had all been eagerly awaiting the release so had high hopes to fulfill. The storyline has a classic “Gotham City is under attack…who will save the day?” premise, but with a twist to the usual Batman character in the beginning, culminating in a strong moral message by the end.
The Joker plays an integral role in the film, and could be seen as slightly dark or scary in some scenes for little ones. However, I think the overall tone of the film lends itself to laughter and action far more than scariness. There is one swear word in the film connected to the name ‘Richard’ but wasn’t offensively used.
All 3 kids were equally enthralled in the non-stop action, funny one-liners and overall wackiness we’ve come to love since “The Lego Movie”. Older viewers appreciated the many in-jokes and appearances from past comic and movie characters. Be assured this is one ‘kids’ movie that is great for all and won’t have you cringing when your kids beg to watch it for the 67th time.
Mr 12 understood much of the theme of this film, and the younger two enjoyed it simply for its fun-factor and funny quotes they’ll no doubt be coming out with non-stop for the next 2 weeks. Some of the heavier sub-text may go over the heads of really young viewers but if your offspring thought The Lego Movie was awesome, they will be thoroughly entertained with this one as well. Overall, we all loved it and I think this film would be suitable for both boys and girls ages 5 and up.
