Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is a fun kids holiday movie that will entertain most kids between 7 and 10 years old. When I asked my nine year old daughter what she thought of the movie after we finished watching it she said “9.5/10”. Her all time benchmark for movies is Cheaper By The Dozen 2 with 10/10, so there’s her reference point for a great movie if you’re wondering.
The Synopsis: In “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul,” a family road trip to attend Meemaw’s 90th birthday party goes hilariously off course thanks to Greg’s newest scheme to get to a video gaming convention. Based on one of the best-selling book series of all time, this family cross-country adventure turns into an experience the Heffleys will never forget.
As a parent going to the movies with my kids I wasn’t expecting too much out of it, but there were a few laugh out loud moments (for childish dad’s at least) and the second half of the movie was well paced enough to keep my attention.
For your parent radar: There was little if any swearing (from memory), but it was a bit patronising to the parents in the film with a bit of disrespect shown to them by the two main child characters. There was one picture of a scantily clad cos-play character from the comic convention but Greg was more interested in the sword she was carrying than what she was wearing.
Overall though it was relatively clean fun with a bit of gross-out humour and our seven and ten year old girls really enjoyed it.
