Every year in Australia on the 11th of November at 11am we pause to observe a minute’s silence to remember those who served and died in all wars.
Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday this year in Australia so it is a great opportunity to spend some time with your kiddos discussing why we remember such occasions and how we can express our gratitude for their sacrifice.
Set out below are 2 things you can do with your kids on this special day.
1. Make Your Own Poppy
Poppies are probably the biggest symbol of remembrance in Australia. It is easy to make your own red poppy and wear it on the day with some heart cutouts.
You will need:
red paper
black pen
scissors
glue
Step 1
Trace around a heart template on your red paper and cut out. You will need 7 heart cut outs in total.
Step 2
Glue them together by overlapping hearts at their centre point as shown below.
Step 3
Keep going until finished and you have a flower shape. Then draw on the black centre with your pen.
2. Gratitude Reflection
Gratitude is a word on high rotation at the moment and for good reason. Gratitude is essentially thankfulness. We can all be thankful for many things in our lives, especially the freedom that is ours to enjoy in this beautiful country. Why not have the kids write down a few thoughts of thankfulness, remembering the freedoms they enjoy as a result of others’ sacrifice. Click here to download Gratitude Comes From The Heart.
