As we head into a new age of learning, it’s worth taking note that there are some great apps out there to help your kids with their education. As you may know, most children love to play games. Many are learning how to utilise smart phones and tablets from a young age, so why not take advantage of this and have a look of some of the top educational apps for helping kids learn?

This is a simple app available in the Apple store. It’s intended for preschool kids and the aim is to help children learn letters, numbers, colours, shapes and sounds in the form of a memory game. 2 – Endless Alphabet
Endless Alphabet is an engaging app intended to help kids learn their ABC’s and build their vocabulary. The Apple app features cute monsters and every word has an interactive puzzle with an animation to illustrate the meaning.

3 – Pogg – Spelling and Verbs
The main character in this app is a green alien named Pogg. The spelling part of this app begins by asking what he should do next, and the player spells out an action for Pogg to perform. It’s a great way for kids aged 2 – 8 to learn how to spell certain words and match up their associated actions. Pogg is available to buy from the Apple store.

4 – My Spelling
This is an Android app aimed at kids aged 5 – 12, and is great for all kinds of spelling practice. The idea for the app came from an eight year old with the intention of making spelling more fun. There are a variety of options to help kids learn, as well as an encouraging marking feature.
5 – My First 101 Words
An Apple app aimed at toddlers, this will help them to learn some basic words with video narration featuring a boy and a girl. It is fun and interactive for young ones and features nouns and verbs which are aimed to improve speech and language development.

6 – Kids Vocab – Mindsnacks
This is an app for 7 – 12 year olds, with the aim of improving vocabulary with colourful mini games. The games are fun and challenging and teach kids proper word usage from a curriculum based on Common Core Standards. This is a really varied educational app from the Apple store that wants kids to have fun while learning.

7 – Kids Learn to Read
Another one for pre-school kids, this is an Android app with three different sections to teach kids basic words and their usage. It is colourful and engaging, featuring cartoon animals that need help getting over a bridge – the correct letters form their crossing.
8 – Eggy Sight Words (Reading Eggs App)
By popular demand, ABC Reading Eggs has released its first app, Eggy Words – Sight Words! This app will help your child recognise and learn the essential sight words that make up a large part of everyday reading. They will do this while playing a fun game that will keep them engaged for many hours. Eggy Words will work on iPads, iPhones and Android phones and tablets.

Maths Apps
1 – Kids Maths
This app is available on Android and is an educational math game. It is colourful and easy to use, with eight levels which gradually grow in difficulty. Each level has ten questions and there is a score table to make it more competitive. Kids love the challenge that it brings and it also helps them to develop their number skills.
2 – Mystery Math Town
Mystery Math Town, available in the Apple app store, follows a friendly ghost trying to rescue fireflies that are hidden around the town. It is for ages 6 – 12 and players use their math skills to unlock doors and passageways. The game can be customised to focus on specific math skills, such as subtraction or multiplication.

3 – Einstein Math Academy
Einstein Math Academy is available on Android, and is great for kids to develop and build upon basic skills. There are four difficulty options and is aimed at toddlers to ten year olds. This is a fun, but challenging app, with a lot of variety for the different age groups.
4 – Kids Numbers and Math
This is an Android app which offers some basic number learning with simple, colourful number games and quizzes. It is aimed at pre-schoolers and is great for them to practice their math skills before they start school.
5 – Math Workout
This is a really challenging app from Android, aimed at older kids and even adults. It’s a great one for practicing more advanced math skills and testing your brainpower! You can select the difficulty level and take a drill to give your brain a bit of a work out. This also allows progress to be tracked, which only adds to the challenge for competitive children!
6 – Math Kid
This one is aimed at kids aged 4 – 12 and is available from the Apple store. It helps to build the foundation for math skills, with different difficulty levels and lots of different options to play about with. This is a clean and simple app, great for those who need a little extra practice.

7 – Park Math
This Apple app is aimed at kids aged 2 – 7 years. It’s really fun and colourful and introduces the basics of math to young children. There are different levels which teach them to count, along with music and nursery rhymes to really engage young ones.

8 – Algebra Tutor
Algebra Tutor covers both algebra and pre-algebra, going step by step through the solutions and highlighting and explaining any mistakes. The Android app has 35 algebra concepts and offers statistics so children can see how they’re doing and areas they need to work on.
9 – Baby Learns Numbers
This is an Android and Apple app for very young children to help them grasp the basics of numbers. Simple and colourful, there are two options depending on age group: 1 – 3 or 3 – 6. The app has two scenes to choose from and will help your child develop cognitive and hand-eye co-ordination skills.

1 – Seasons and Weather!
The aim of this app is to teach young children about the differences in seasons and weather. It features three games and is a great introduction to the world of science. The colourful and friendly content is age appropriate, aimed at kids around four and upwards and is available from the Apple app store.

2 – Pop Science Kids
This is a really exciting Android app which helps kids to identify various science related symbols, planets, inventions and sounds which appear in different bubbles. The aim of the game is to identify the correct one and pop the bubble. Each level brings in new knowledge and the game itself is detailed and fascinating for kids to play.
3 – Bobo Explores Light
This Apple app is an interactive science textbook for kids aged seven and upwards. It features a robot named Bobo and serves to teach kids about how light works and all the science related factors associated with this, such as how the eye sees, the colour spectrum and why the sky is blue, to name a few. 5 – Let’s Learn
Let’s Learn is an engaging and well-illustrated anatomy app for kids. Available in the Apple store, it is aimed at 7 – 11 year olds and covers the reproductive, muscular, circulatory and skeletal systems. There are some really interesting facts on this one, such as comparing a whale’s heart to a chick’s. It is great for kids who like to interact as they learn.

6 – Periodic Table
The Periodic Table is listed on this app, along with over 30 facts about each element. This Android app is great for older kids who are studying the elements. There are also audio clips for help with pronunciation, as well as a quiz so kids can test themselves.
7 – Exploring the Solar System
This is an Apple app for young astronomers. It answers some really interesting questions such as why are there seasons, why does the moon change shape and what else is there in space? It also has images of space provided by NASA and overall a lot of interesting information about the solar system. There are two characters to lead kids through this app, which has some great interactive features to experiment with.

Weird But True is a best selling Apple app full of crazy facts that can be rated by curious kids on a ‘weird-o-meter’. It also has a share feature, so kids can send the grossest ones to their friends and there is a search option so they can look up facts about their favourite scientific subject.
