I don’t know about you but school bugs and sicknesses are not fun AT ALL!!  I have been a school mum for nearly 3 years and so far we have been doing ok at avoiding some of the nasties.  We have had nits twice.  We managed to totally avoid getting nits in our first year of school, which was awesome, but we had a visit from them once in grade one and once in grade two.

My eldest daughter got school sores during the first week of school in grade one, so that was not fun.  It was my first school sores experience and it was hellish.  She did not cope so much with the bandaids on and off, twice to three times a day for the antibiotic cream and clean plus the oral antibiotics.  This experience had me invest in an antibiotic body wash, which I use on my kids whenever they have an open cut or wound on themselves in the evening when they have a bath or shower.  So far so good and we have managed to keep school sores at bay.

Worms have been the big one for us.  I swear in my daughter’s first year of school, I found it a nightmare to get rid of the things despite my efforts.  I have since learnt that you get your kiddos to take a worming chocolate square 2 weeks after they have taken the initial one to break the cycle of re-infection. For some reason I did not know this information when my daughter first started school.

Even though we know how to get rid of worms once we have contracted them, it does not stop our kids from picking them up from time to time.

I did a bit of research online to find out some likely places your kids can pick up worms, and below is a list of places I found.

  • Sandpits
  • Carpet
  • Couches
  • Bedding
  • Bath Towel
  • Playdough
  • Cuddley Toys / Blankeys
  • Toilet Seat
  • Pyjamas

When it comes to the school grounds, a common place kids tend to pick up worms is from the toilet seat or from a child they are playing with who has recently gone to the toilet and not washed their hands properly.  At home, once one of your family members has worms, they can spread it around quite easily without strict hygiene.

Worm eggs are infectious within a few hours of being deposited and may remain viable for up to 3 weeks. All it takes is for your child or you to ingest one egg and BOOM worms.

Because the eggs make your bottom itchy, children often scratch and forget to wash their hands, which results in them spreading the eggs around wherever they are playing. The other thing to note is kids with worms can also have no symptoms at all and could be spreading them around without you even knowing.

We have tried a few different brands of worm medication on the market to deal with them including Combantrin®, which the girls have always been happy to take!  We treat our whole family when we know one of us has contracted worms as a sure way to get rid of them, as they spread so easily there is a good chance one or all of us have already picked them up.

*Remember: whenever using medicines to always read the label, use only as directed and if symptoms persist to see your healthcare professional. 4134.

Being a mum to 3 kids (one of them full time at home with me) and trying to juggle everything became pretty crazy.
