To celebrate our country’s beautiful climate and the necessity to wear a hat most days – we’ve put together our favourite 5 styles for you and the kiddos this Summer.
The Bucket
This would have to be the most popular hat on the market. It looks great on guys and girls of all ages. The bucket hat is comfy and provides great sun protection. It sits snug on your head and shades your face and neck well. They come in every colour and pattern and are also washable.
The Raffia Cowboy
Made popular by our very own Elle McPherson this is a classic hat. I love them (unfortunately I can’t wear them though as my head is too small – aka pin head). Make sure your get one with a tight weave to maximise the sun protection. These are available in adult and kids sizes.
The Fedora
This hat has been very popular the last few years and looks great. You can wear them from the beach to brunch. However, the brim on some of them is too narrow so just make sure they will provide adequate sun protection. (The Cancer Council recommends a 7.5cm brim for broad hats).
The Floppy Hat
Personally, I love these. They provide fabulous sun protection and it doesn’t matter if they get a bit knocked around they seem to return to their shape. Again, they are available in lots of different colours and trims.
The Sou-wester
The Sou-wester is like the love child of a legionnaires cap and bucket hat! It has a broad brim but is slightly longer at the back (not as long as traditional legionnaires caps) to provide sun protection to the neck and shoulders as well.
My Father-in-Law insists on buying our kids a legionnaires hat every Christmas – I must steer him in this direction this year! haha
I have a good friend who used to say that hats weren’t “her thing”. I don’t think you can afford for them not to be your thing. They are the ultimate summer accessory.
You just have to find the one that suits you and provides the best UV protection!
