As the school holidays roll on, many of us are starting to think about getting organised for the new school year. Uniforms are being tried on, books are being checked and covered and undoubtedly things are being labelled.

This year I’ve been lucky enough to try out the Brother P-Touch H105 Label Maker and I have to admit I have been pleasantly surprised. It’s a pretty cheap device at around $25 from Officeworks and once I started using it I found so many places where it was handy.

Setup

The setup was a breeze. I just inserted 6 x AAA batteries (which is quite a few but I’m assuming it will last ages since it doesn’t run a lot and there is an optional AC adapter if you really are going to use it a lot), click the cartridge in which was super simple and turned the machine on.

I was a bit lazy and didn’t read any of the manual but I was able to make my first label within 60 seconds and I even changed the font and put a border on … It’s really intuitive.

Features

The P-touch has all the regular numbers, letters and symbols that you’d expect from any keyboard but it also allows you to add seven different frames, and 178 special symbols to make your labels slightly different. These are probably more suited to the younger children but they include things like stars, hearts and musical notes which allow you to customise them for different subjects.

Did It Work?

Now I have used other labellers before and the main problem that I have had is sticking the labels onto different surfaces. For example, each year I use a display folder to store my personal bills and account statements and I label it for the financial year but for some reason the label always peels off because the spine surface isn’t super flat. With the P touch label it sticks firm and this makes me think that this is actually going to be much better for the kids because they will treat things much rougher than I ever will.

At the end of the day, having the labels stick is probably the single most important thing and these really do seem to stick better than any others that I have ever tried.

The other great thing is that the kids really enjoyed using it and they did a lot of my work for me … it kept them busy and they had fun. There are different coloured labels as well as different sizes, and my kids could switch the cartridges in and out quite simply themselves to make labels they were happy with.

I have to admit to having a little fun with my new high schooler taking him a very un-cool label for his book covered in love hearts 😉

The Verdict

The Brother P-touch Label Maker is the simplest labeller that I have used and the labels stick really well to almost anything I tried. For $25 it was affordable and my kids loved using it.

This is a great machine to make back to school a little easier … Find out more about the PT-H105 online here
