When the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon was released this year (2014), I was skeptical because, in my experience, sequels are rarely as good as the originals.
I was hesitant to go see it, positive that I would be disappointed. I couldn’t have been more wrong. How to Train Your Dragon 2 has matured with its audience. The theme is darker than the original and focuses on the growth and maturity of the characters. Instead of repeating a version of the original story, the sequel builds on the original story with its own unique plot.
The original cast of Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, and Gerard Butler give stunning performances, and Jonah Hill continues to add the element of humor viewers of the first movie knew and loved. I am very happy that I gave this movie a chance. In addition to having an excellent plot and wonderful characters the movie is visually stunning.
I will likely purchase this on DVD in the future to add to my animated movie collection. While I feel my daughter is still too young for a story this intense, my husband and I still thoroughly enjoy watching animated movies like this on our own.
